Four tight races in the grand final of the first Audi Baltic Match Race in Travemünde, Germany saw Polish sailor Karol Jablonski defeating the illbruck Challenge Match Racing Team 3:1. But Morten Henriksen and his crew Arne Wilcken and Gunnar Knierim weren’t too unhappy because the 2nd place at this Grade One Event was a great success for them.

“We did our very best today, fighting really hard, but we missed a bit of luck today”, said Henriksen after the final. Wind conditions were quite different from what they had on the first three days of racing in Travemünde. The breeze came along the shore and was very shifty with puffs mostly from the beach side. Jablonski took one of those to close the gap between himself and the leader in the first race then overtaking Henriksen and score the first point.

Only race two saw the illbruck Challenge trio in front at the starting line and controlling the whole race. “We hoped to get the better left end of the line also in the other races, but Karol did it a little bit better,” said Morten Henriksen. Especially in the fourth race, when both boats were close together all over the course Jablonski reacted promptly when his competitor tried to attack and Jablonski hold the lead.

First prize was an Audi TT Roadster sports car plus 15.000 US-Dollar. Henriksen & Co. took 10.000 US-Dollar before tax but the prize money wasn’t their most important success. “For only five month of sailing together now, we achieved a lot and we’re still improving”, said the coach. It was a another big step in the illbruck Challenge preparation for the XXII. America’s Cup in 2003 whilst the race crew is getting ready for the Volvo Ocean Race Round the World.

During the Travemünder Woche exciting sporting events, "one on one" racing and "crew against crew" battles all follow an extremely simple principle: whoever reaches the finish line first is the winner. This is sailing at its very best. This is the Audi Baltic Match Race, which will be held in Travemünde from July 25 - 29 in the Lübecker Bucht. This is a renowned Grade 1 Regatta event which is raced as a Match Race in boats of the "Streamline" class.

Prizes awarded by the AUDI AG equal a total of 100,000 USD. The first-place winner will leave the cockpit of his or her Match Race boat and step into an Audi TT Roadster.

There are many great personalities to mention: Jochen Schümann, Luc Pillot and Morten Henriksen, to name a few. The America's Cup Teams that are well-known not only within the world of sailing are also main players: the Italian Prada Team, the French team head by Le Defi, the Swiss Alinghi (Swiss Challenge) team, as well as the German "illbruck Challenge" team will all take the opportunity to participate in the Match Race in order to prepare their syndicates.
