Manhasset Bay, on the western end of Long Island Sound was crowded with spectator boats on Monday, September 3, 2001 as Peter Gilmour and his crew, Kazuhiko Sofuku, Tatsuya Wakinaga and Yasuhiro Yaji won the 20th International Knickerbocker Cup, hosted by the Knickerbocker YC in Port Washington, New York.

The conditions were difficult at best for the four teams who raced yesterday, as the wind was very shifty and light. The Race Committee postponed the races at 9:30 am due to lack of wind. Shortly after noon, winds from 3-6 knots sent the RC out on the bay to set up courses. The semi-finals were cancelled because of wind conditions, and the four teams – Peter Gilmour, Ed Baird, James Spithill and Ken Read – match raced for final standings. It was Gilmour against Baird, and Spithill vs. Read.

The first two races gave one win to each of the four skippers, forcing a third and final match. Even with fluky wind, this was exciting match racing, with each team working hard to gain advantage at the start and trying to predict where the wind might be best on the race course. Twice the RC used an alternate rounding mark as the wind kept shifting all over the bay. The final match found Gilmour on the right side of the bay with a little wind that carried him to the finish line before Baird. Spithill and Read were close at several points in their final match, but it was Spithill who took the honors at the finish line.

Variable winds marked the fourth day of match racing at the Knickerbocker Cup on Manhasset Bay in Port Washington. Winds out of the NE held steady at about 8-10 knots for most of the day, but disappeared early afternoon, never to return. The hoped-for southerly didn’t filled in and racing was cancelled late afternoon. The second round robin was completed, and semi-finals begun when the wind died.

At a skippers’ meeting that was held on the Race Committee boat out on the bay, several decisions were made: the 5-8 place finishers decided to compete in a sail-off if held before end of day, but with the wind not cooperating, the sail-off never took place, and 5th place through 8th place were final based on position at the end of the second round robin.

The second decision was made by Peter Gilmour, who as the leader, could choose which of the other semi-finalists he would like to sail against - Ed Baird, Ken Read or James Spithill. He chose Ed Baird, which makes sense as these two skippers have won the Knickerbocker Cup in the past (Ed Baird won in 1993, 1994 and 2000, and Peter Gilmour won in 1998).

Racing will be fierce as Gilmour/Baird and Read/Spithill match up on Monday, September 3rd.

    DAY 1

The first day of racing at the 2001 International Knickerbocker Cup started with no wind in the morning, causing the Regatta Chairman to postpone racing until the first warning gun was sounded at 11:40 am. on Thursday, August 30, 2001. Thanks to a 12-14 knot southerly that filled in about 2:00 pm, five flights were completed before the end of the day.

Racing was very competitive; there was a 5-way tie for second place for the day, and a 6-way tie for third place.

The first flight matched up last year’s Knickerbocker winner Ed Baird, USA, with the 1998 winner Peter Gilmour, USA, producing a photo finish with Gilmour just edging out Baird by a few seconds.

Gilmour, who is with OneWorld Challenge for the America’s Cup, lead for the day with four points, followed by five teams with three points each: Ed Baird, USA; Jes Gram-Hansen, Denmark; Andy Horton, USA; Ken Read, USA; and Matthieu Richard, France.

The third place tie, with one point each, included Cameron Appleton, New Zealand; Andrew Arbuzov, Russia; Morten Henriksen, Germany; Gustav Nilsson, Sweden; Lars Nordbjerg, Denmark; and James Spithill, USA.

The 20th Annual Knickerbocker Cup match races will be held in Manhasset Bay on Long Island Sound, near the Knickerbocker Yacht Club of Port Washington, NY, on August 28 through September 3, 2001.

The Knickerbocker Cup is an ISAF Grade 1 ranked event, founded in 1982 by Yachting Hall of Famer Ed du Moulin and Arthur Knapp Jr, and has had a long association with America's Cup greats. It has been won by such notable skippers as Dave Dellenbaugh, skipper for America 3 in its successful 1992 bid for the America's Cup,and Russell Coutts, skipper for the reigning America's Cup champion, Team New Zealand.

Ed Baird, three-time winner of the Knickerbocker Cup, will be defending their 2000 title against some America's Cupper.

Peter Gilmour,
who now sails for OneWorld Challenge, has bought out the big guns, with Olympic gold and silver medallist Ben Ainslie in his crew. His roomate, fresh from finishing a good european campaign, is australian James Spithill.

Other prominent matchracers such as Ken Read (Stars & Stripes 2003 Challenge), Cameron Appleton from the Team NZ, Morten Henriksen (representing the German Illbruck Challenge) or the young Danish top ten skippers Jes Gram Hansen will make this event very difficult to win for any of the competitors.

Other skippers participating (and their ISAF rankings), are Denmark's Lars Nordbjerg (25e), France's Mathieu Richard (30e), Russia's Andrew Arbuzov (54e), Sweden's Gustav Nilsson (59e) and the young american Andy Horton (89e).
