The American helmsman Paul Cayard has won the second edition of the Nation's Cup- La Sfida by a 3-1 margin over the Australian Peter Gilmour. His name has now been added to the winner of the last edition of the Nation's Cup in the year 2000 - Russell Coutts.

In the first race which started at 10am with a light unstable breeze blowing, Cayard won by a 15 second margin over Gilmour. After winning the start, the helmsman of the Oracle racing team always maintained the lead accumulating a 37 second advantage at the second upwind mark.

It was Gilmour however who one the second race by a distance of 1 minute and 20 seconds. It was the start that determined the success of this race, but the helmsman of the One World team increased his lead at every mark.

Cayard won the third race after risking a penalty on the pre start. He managed to get to the right hand side of the course, and after the first upwind mark gained a 26 second advantage and crossed the finish line 2 minutes and 30 seconds ahead.

The last match was held with an even shiftier wind blowing. The Californian helmsman was in constant control over Gilmour and came in with a 4 minute advantage thus winning the Nations Cup- La Sfida.

In recognition of tomorrow's final at the Nations Cup between Paul Cayard and Peter Gilmour, today the 3rd to 8th places were assigned. At the first race, Oracle 1 of Tommaso Chieffi with Francesco Rapetti for Alinghi (who are the only Italians on a team trying to conquest the America's Cup in 2003) were beaten by One World's Kelvin Harrap by 2-1.

Harrap then went onto race Mitjia Kosmina to gain the 3rd place. The American won the first match while the Slovenian won the second. On the 3rd race Kosmina was penalized for an premature start ensuring Harrap had no difficulty in winning by a 2-1 gap. The Slovenians on their first attempt at the Nation's Cup finished an honourable 4th place.

For the 7th and 8th places, Murray Jones beat Furio Benussi by a straight 2-0 margin. Substituting Russell Coutts, Jones alongside his fellow countryman Brad Butterworth are at Trieste with the Alinghi Swiss Challenger team of the Italian-Swiss industrialist Ernesto Bertarelli. The 7th place after victory of the last edition of the Nation's Cup was not up to their normal high standards.

To end the day Tommaso Chieffi and Paolo Cian raced for the 5th and 6th places. Chieffi won a hard fought first race. In the second after a premature start Cheffi had to bear off the course line to repeat his start again losing approx 30 seconds. With aggressive ability the crew managed to close the advantage gained by Cian, and on the second beat, Chieffi managed to overtake Cian to go onto win and take 5th place.

Paul Cayard and Peter Gilmour are the two finalists at this year's edition of the Nations Cup. In the semi finals held today, Cayard beat Tommaso Chieffi by 2-1. With the same margin, Gilmour reached the final by beating Kelvin Harrap. The final will be raced on Sunday.

The day started with the match between Mitija Kasmina (Slovenian Match Race) and Paolo Cian of Mascalzone Latino. The Slovenian beat the skipper from Naples with a straight 2-0 result.

In the afternoon the two teams of the One World consortium from Seattle, the first of which is entrusted to the Australian Peter Gilmour and the second to the New Zealander Kelvin Harrap, descended onto the water. In the first race the probable successor Harrap beat the boss Gilmour. Gilmour then went on to win the other two races.

A drop in wind pressure halted the racing for a short while, then when the wind was sufficient enough to proceed, Paul Cayard and Tommaso Chieffi commenced the deciding race for a place in the semi final that started yesterday. The two helmsmen from the Oracle racing team fought a spectacular race with Cayard winning by a three second gap.

Tomorrow, starting at 11am, the regattas between Murray Jones and Furio Benussi will take place deciding the 7th and 8th positions. For the 6th and 5th places the regatta will be between Paolo Cian and the loser between Tommaso Chieffi and Kelvin Harrap. The winner will then go on to race Mitjia Kosmina to decide the 3rd and 4th places.

Due to the light wind blowing over Trieste for the last few days, the semi final of the Nations Cup between Paul Cayard (Oracle 1) and Tommaso Chieffi(Oracle 2) was suspended with the temporary result remaining at one match each, with Cayard winning the first and Chieffi the second.

The helmsman and tactician of Il Moro Di Venezia from 1992, are together again on the Oracle racing team of the new economy magnate Larry Ellison that will race in the next America's Cup. The semi final should finish tomorrow starting at around 1pm.

This morning however, the series of recuperated races took place, the first between Mascalzone Latino of Paolo Cian and Sailing Planet of Furio Benussi. After the victory of Cian yesterday, Benussi took the first race of the morning, then Cian went on to win the second, gaining him victory for a place in the next round valid for the third place.

These races were followed by the confrontation between Alinghi Swiss Challenger entrusted to Murray Jones and Brad Butterworth, current holders of the America's Cup, and the Slovenian team of Mitija Kosmina. It was in fact a surprise result, seeing the Slovenians winning by a 2-0 margin giving them access to a place in the next round also valid for the third place.

Tomorrow's programme at the Nation's Cup starting at 10 am, will see the races between Kosmina and Paolo Cian take place followed by the races between Cayard and Chieffi.

Paul Cayard at the helm of the 1st Oracle racing team (the second team skipper is Tommaso Chieffi) inflicted a straight 3-0 victory over the home team Sailing Planet captained by Furio Benussi, on the third day of racing at the Nation's Cup.

The calm weather conditions made the programme of events difficult to achieve - in fact the morning sessions of heats had to be cancelled. Cayard and Benuusi, after attempting to race for 20 minutes had to stop, but, at around 3pm Cayard took only one and a half hours to dominate the race.

The first pair of losers of the quarter finals followed, to race for the third place. Benussi therefore remained in the water to confront Mascalzone Latino of Paolo Cian and Vasco Vascotto but only managed one race due to poor wind, with Cian and Vascotto winning regardless of the conditions.

Tomorrow, this session of races will again commence, followed by the race between Murray Jones (Alinghi) and Mitija Kasmina (Slovenian MR). In the afternoon the first semi final between the two Oracle racing teams with Cayard against Chieffi will take place. The other semi final is scheduled on Friday morning, where Peter Gilmour will confront his America's Cup team mate Kelvin Harrap in the One World team colours.

After the late afternoon storm of yesterday, there was little wind at Trieste today. A light westerly wind allowed the match between Peter Gilmour (OneWorld) and Mitija Kasmina of the Slovenian Match Race team to go ahead, seeing the Americans victorious by a 3-1 margin.

The calm wind forced the organisers to suspend the racing for over an hour, then at approximately 1630 hours the teams of Alinghi Swiss Challenge (Murray Jones and Brad Butterworth), and OneWorld 2 (Kelvin Harrap) descended onto the water. After a victory by the Swiss team in the first match, the Americans then went onto win the 2nd, 3rd and 4th, gaining a place in the semi finals.

Tomorrow, starting from 10am the heats of the quarter finals will conclude with the match between Paul Cayard (Oracle 1) and Furio Benussi from the home team, Sailing Planet, followed by the draw between the losers of the quarter finals. The best two teams will confront the losers of the semi finals for the third place.

   DAY 1

Today, Tommaso Chieffi from the Oracle racing syndicate gained a 3-1 victory over Paolo Cian from the Mascalzone Latino team, to gain a place in the quarter finals.

The regulations for the races made by the yacht club Adriaco, and constructed for the next Louis Vuitton cup for the challengers for the America's Cup, in fact foresees that the eight challenging teams confront each other over the best of five races in a direct elimination formula on a windward course a short distance from the seafront of Trieste. The winners go to the semi finals, while the second place teams enter in a knockout series over a best of three formula to gain the third place.

After the withdrawal of the Prada Challenge team,(the reason being a change in their training programme), a Slovenian team has been included in the Nations Cup, captained by Mitija Kosmina. During the afternoon races the Slovenians were up against Peter Gilmour of the Oneworld racing team from Seattle, but after only just one race won by the Americans the races had to be stopped due to the breaking of the gennaker on the Slovenian boat, but will be re-sailed in the morning.

The following races will be between the second Oneworld syndicate of Kelvin Harrap and Alinghi Swiss Challenge of Murray Jones.

In the afternoon the race participants will be Paul Cayard, who like Chieffi, is of the Oracle team colours, and the home team whose skipper is Furio Benussi.
